Reynolda Reads: Old in Art School: A Memoir of Starting Over by Nell Irvin Painter
Join Reynolda Reads, Reynolda's seasonal book discussion group. This season we will read Old in Art School: A Memoir of Starting Over by Nell Irvin Painter, a memoir about the author’s decision to reinvent herself after retirement. Historian and Princeton professor, Painter enrolls in art school in her sixties to pursue drawing and painting, eventually earning both a BFA and an MFA. The book ties in personal narrative with reflections on creativity, race, and what it means to be an artist. Painter writes about her experiences of feeling out of place among younger classmates, redefining her own identity, and making art. Please read the book and come prepared to discuss this revelatory memoir! Preregistration strongly encouraged. Please note that this program takes place at Delta Arts Center at 2611 New Walkertown Rd, Winston-Salem, NC 27101.
